Simplify and automate sports highlights creation.
KEY IMPROVEMENTS:
PROBLEM:
A few years ago I joined the media team of my local cricket club (Manly Warringah DCC) with the aim of streamlining their video production. The media team is run exclusively by volunteers with very little, if any, editing experience.
At least 2 matches per weekend are filmed, resulting in +/- 6 hours of footage per day. For each of these days we create a batting and bowling highlights package as well as a play of the week. Each highlight package is output in multiple formats to post on facebook (Manly Warringah District Cricket Club), instagram (manlycricket) etc.
The vast amount of footage, inexperience of the editing team, and limitations posed by their slower computers meant that we needed to drastically improve our workflow in order to create more content.
SOLUTION:
We developed an extension where the editors were able to input in and out point data as well as data about that specific play (players involved, type of play etc.) all without touching any editing software. This data is then shared to a central location. We have 2 editors who know their way around Adobe Premiere Pro. Using our custom workflows they import the data and streamline/automatically setup the project, create multiple products, QA, export, create archive and export the archive, all in a simple to follow, step by step workflow.
This helped us get named as runners up in the Cricket Australia Technology & Media Initiative of the Year Award for 2021. We are also one of Australia's most followed amateur sports teams on social media.
